Writing articles in Wordpress:
In case you haven’t used Wordpress before, here are simple instructions on how to write an Post or a Page. You use the Site Admin link in the sidebar or the Admin link at the top of the page to get to the system menu. Select Write from the menu bar, then choose what type of item you want to write.

A Post is a normal Article. What you see is what other’s will see.

A Page is a static page that is treated differently. It’s considered a static page and is placed with other static pages on the Front Menu. Unless you are authorized, you won’t see this option.

This How To… is an example of a Page.

Using the Editor(s):

The default for new posts and edits is the Advanced VISUAL editor (TinyMCE), unless there is an issue with the text formatting, the internet, or your browser. You may see the raw text editor if there is an error somewhere. You can try to correct the issue or simply save/publish it the way it is.

To try to correct the issue:
If you see garbage or strange codes above the editor, try reloading the page and see if the Visual editor works. You can also try clearing your browser cache if you know how. Generally speaking the error clears when you reload the page.

Using the CODE editor gives you a pseudo html view of your article. Most formatting tags are hidden.

Using the VISUAL editor provides you with a WYSIWYG editor with buttons for formatting, links, inserting external images and so forth.

Adding Gallery Images:
The Gallery is an additional, embedded site where blog users can add (upload) pictures to their personal album and reference them in articles, other sites, or use the default gallery images. A gallery album is automatically created for you when you register for an account here. To use it press the Gallery link in the header.

To add images using the VISUAL editor, find the G2 button. It’s usually the second button on the second line or the last button on the first and only line. When you press it a pop-up opens <span style=”color: #000000;”>(you may need to allow popups from this site) showing you the base gallery page. Find the image you want by browsing the gallery, there are pagenumbers on the bottom of the pop-up and a breadcrumb type album link at the top. To insert the image you can simply click it and you’ll be taken to the Advanced Formatting button where you are presented with additional formatting and insertion options. To place the image, use the insert button. If you are not happy with the image placement you may select and drag it (inserted where the cursor appears) or press delete, then try again with a different formatting option. All options are css styles.

To maintain more control over image placement by entering HTML, first switch to CODE view, then select the WPG2 tab at the top of the editor page to browse the Gallery and add an image. You can add a single image or a link to an entire album. Be aware that switching to CODE view resets your current postion to the top of the document.

Example:

<wpg2>443</wpg2>

of a link to an Album

Example of a link to an item itself: <wpg2id>600</wpg2id>

Example of a text link to an image: Prize Winning Peace Rose

Example of thumbnail with link to parent album :<wpg2>591</wpg2>

Example of text link to ALBUM containing image: Yellow Flash Cardinal Rose

Formatting your Articles:

If your article appears all centered and you don’t like it, select all text (ctrl-A) and make sure the format drop down is set to paragraph. I’ll see if I can correct the issue as time goes on.

If your BLOG is going to be more than one paragraph, Please use the MORE button after your first paragraph so your entire article is not displayed. If you don’t use MORE the first 70 words or so will probably be displayed with a “Finish reading” link below. I’ve had isuses with that particular plugin.

To add a new line or to break a current line without adding a paragraph, press shift+enter
Like this line here. It was added by pressing shift+enter at the end of the previous line. The line formatting options can be changed in the Advanced Editor. The last button (show/hide advanced) adds additional options to the format bar at the top of the editor.

To add a Quote Block (for quoting previous articles or personal comments), press indent in the formatting bar, or you can enter code view and enter
quote text
like I did below.

Example of a Block Quote:
A Block Quote is indented and highlighted to set it apart from the article text. You can use shift+enter in block quotes as well to keep the next line from being double spaced.

When you are finished writing, Press PUBLISH to keep and publish your Blog.

You can attach files using the boxes just below the editor window.

I’m working on installing a plugin that will let you upload a compressed file that, If formatted properly will display as a link.

Editor Options:

The editor opens with a default of 25 lines for the editing window. You can drag it larger using the diagonal grab bar on the lower right corner if it’s too small for your screen. We use the TinyMCE Advanced editor here. Occasionally it does strange things like backspace two characters etc… It’s generally a good editor but it has it’s quirks.

Smileys (emoticons) can be added using simple
or
and they will be converted to graphic emoticons.
See Wordpress Codex Smiley for specifics details.

Enjoy!
