    • !HISTORY: In 15224, Giovanni de Verrazano, a Florentine navigator, visited Block Island, which is the present Newport, Rhode Island. New Shoreman was incorporated into Newport in 1672. Washington was not an original county. It became a county in 1728 and was incorportated from Newport.

      !PARENTS: More research needs to be done. Is Mercy the daughter of John Rathbone and Ann Dodge or the parents Thomas Rathbone and Mary Dickens? Since the naming patterns of the children fit better with John Rathbone and Ann Dodge this would be the more logical choice. More research needs to be carried out on probates etc. John Rathbone and Ann Dodge are the correct parents. Thomas Rathbone, an uncle, did have a child named Mary who was born 24 November 1687.

      !MARRIAGE: History of the town Stonington, New London, Connecticut from its 1st settlements. 1649-1900. U.S. Conn; New London, Stonington; D3w; p. 276-278. Jonathan Burch married Mary Rathbone on 22 August 1706 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. NOTE: Mary the daughter of Thomas Rathbone and Mary Dickens was born on 24 November 1687. She married John Garner about 1717.
