Willem WILLEMSEN md Mayke Pieterse WYCKOFF, abt 1677, Flatlands, Long Island, NY.
Biographical Notes: *Willem's name appears on the 1676 assessment roll of Amersfoort, possibly for land owned by his father, Willem Gerretsen. In 1670, he received lot number 32 on Johnson's Island from the inhabitants of Gravesend, Long Island (Kings County), NY,at a town meetingalloting tillable lands. It is possible that he already owned land there. He is found on the Gravesend assessment roll in 1683, in which he is recorded as Constable; and in the census of Gravesend in 1698.
When he took an oath of allegiance to the king in 1687, he is listed as having lived 30 years in this country. He served as town assessor in 1694 and in subsequent years. Another division of land in Gravesend in 1700 allotted him lots 16 and 29 of the 9 penny lots of meadow ground, and lot 29 of the penny lots of salt meadows in "Long Fly and Cedar Neck, Hugh Gerretsen's and Hog Point".
In 1715, he and his son Nicholas were among the inhabitants of Gravesend signiing an agreement to support a collegiate pastor for the Dutch Reformed Churches of Gravesend, Jamaica, New Utrecht, and Flatlands.
Willem died on 2 February, 1722, according to the Bible record. He left a will dated 1 December, 1721 (New York City Wills, 1708-28, p288). [See Ancestry World Tree Project: GERRITS(Z)EN-WILLIAMSON, Ancestry.com, for parts of his will.]
